The recipe for benchmark values: How to implement a successful QC and QA program in the IVF lab

 

Aims and Goals of the Course:

To update the knowledge and understanding of Quality Control and Assurance in the IVF lab. To go through the management of culture media in order to achieve an excellent culture system while learning how to measure, validate, and control essential culture parameters in the IVF lab: temperature, CO2, pH, osmolality and VOCs. To understand how IVF organization and daily routine can affect quality control and influence consistent results.

Hands-on sessions will put in evidence the instability of essential parameters in certain settings and will let the trainee understand importance of details in routine practice.

 

Scientific Program:

Theoretical Sessions (30-45 min duration):

  • “Updating the parameters needed to ensure a stable culture system ” by Dr. Gloria Calderón
  • “Troubleshooting: Discussions on dogmas, myths, adversities in the IVF lab routine” by Dr. Gloria Calderón

Hands-On Sessions:

  • Incubators: pH, gas and temperature control in different types of incubators.
  • Early morning setup and daily routine in the IVF lab.
  • pH measurements with blood analyzer and pH online.
  • Temperature measurements in all of the heated stages with different kinds of external probes: Thermodata buttons and Picologger.
  • Discover and understand different types of culture dishes and their relation with heated stages and embryo culture.
  • Possibility of getting in touch with the most modern technology and equipment currently available in the IVF field.
  • How to handle culture media: Aliquoting, storage, setting up of dishes, HSA, temperature, osmolarity and pH.
  • Evaluation of temperature and pH fluctuation in different culture systems.
  • Lab routine and practical aspects that affect QC&QA.
